The Liberia Finance and Trust Corporation was established in 1976 as one of the
very first locally owned financial services institution in Liberia; and at a time
when financial access to small enterprises was very limited. LFTC, therefore,
launched itself as a service provider for smallholders with a special focus on
Agriculture, shelter, and the skilling and empowerment of the individual
entrepreneur.
The tragic history of the war in Liberia forced LFTC, as it did many other businesses, to
suspend business for several years from 1990 to 2006. The company resumed
business in a limited way due to the prevailing conditions of recovery from war,
providing small loan services to Credit Union members for their basic needs such
as school fees.
LFTC is licensed again by the Central Bank of Liberia to reopen its financial
services. The company will, in the coming three years, work on re-establishing
itself as a financial services provider, fully mindful of the changed and changing
economic environment that was affected by the Ebola pandemic and more
recently by the COVID-19 crisis, both of which impacted businesses and the provision
of services in the country.
The company is conscious of the challenges and opportunities created by the
electronic banking systems in place, as well as by the new technologies in general.
LFTC is, therefore, taking into account these realities and the fact that many more
local financial services organizations are present in Liberia today, in determining
the business focus areas and the target constituencies for its services.
